Gratitude is often held up as a cure-all, a mental salve for life’s challenges. Be thankful, they say. Count your blessings, even when the world feels unkind. And for the longest time, I bought into that philosophy. But one day, as I stared at an overdue rent notice, the futility of relying on gratitude alone hit me like a ton of bricks.
